Vegetation - Sonoran Mojave Desert [ds3199]

California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) contracted Aerial Information Systems (AIS) to create a fine-scale vegetation map of portions of the Mojave Desert and Sonoran desert ecoregions that are not currently covered by existed fine-scale vegetation mapping, an area of 4,399,242 acres. The mapping area encompasses multiple counties including Inyo County, Riverside County and San Bernardino County. The minimum mapping unit (MMU) is 10 acres for desert types and 1 acre for non-desert types. For special stands including: wetlands, riparian, and rock outcrop; the mmu is 1 acres or ¼ for non-desert types. Landuse types had an mmu of 2.5 acres. Wash types were mapped with a 5 acre mmu. The vegetation map adheres to the 2008 National Vegetation Classification Standard (NVCS) and the Manual of California Vegetation (MCV). The project was conducted in 3 phases. Field Recon performed by CDFW, AIS, and CNPS. Accuracy assessments were performed by California Native Plant Society and Ironwood staff during 2025. The overall Fuzzy Accuracy Assessment score for the final vegetation map is 89.4 percent. The vegetation map was produced using 2022 NAIP imagery 60 cm and 2022 Hexagon 15 cm imagery. More information can be found in the project report here: https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=245070.
